Machair — the rare, calcareous coastal grassland found only on the Atlantic west coasts of Scotland and Ireland. In the Outer Hebrides, particularly on North Uist and South Uist, it lies directly behind the white sandy shores: a flower-filled meadow with rare orchids, clover, and bellflowers blooming in summer, with the turquoise-blue Atlantic Ocean beyond. One of Europe’s most species-rich habitats.
