High-quality Scottish knitwear, made in Scotland since 1929
Harley of Scotland
Where the North Sea meets the rugged cliffs of
and the wind whistles across endless moorlands—that is where
Harley of Scotland has its origins. Since 1929, the family-owned company
from Peterhead has been knitting sweaters that are more than just clothing: they are a piece of the Scottish
soul, woven into wool. What fishermen once wore for protection against the elements,
has today become the epitome of timeless knitwear—without ever forgetting its
roots.
At the heart of every piece is the
unique seamless knitting technique, in which each garment is crafted as a single piece
—without seams, without compromise. The result is a fit that
flatters the body and a durability that lasts for decades
. Whether it’s a classic Fair Isle sweater with its characteristic
patterned bands, bold cable knit, or a simple slipover for
everyday wear—every style bears the signature of three generations of the Harley family.
Crafted from the finest virgin wool, soft
Geelong lambswool, and select natural fibers, the Harley
of Scotland collection combines Scottish craftsmanship with elegant,
Scottish knitwear by Harley of Scotland
Frequently Asked Questions
Harley of Scotland
Yes, absolutely. Harley of Scotland was founded in 1929 in Peterhead, Scotland, and is now the market leader in seamless knitwear. The company enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide for its Fair Isle sweaters and the finest lambswool knitwear, all handcrafted in Scotland.
Harley of Scotland is best known for its unique seamless knitting technique, in which each garment is crafted as a single piece—rather than being sewn together from separate parts. Particularly popular are the classic Fair Isle sweaters with their distinctive patterns, sweaters made from pure new wool, and cardigans for women and men.
With seamless knitting technology, each garment is knitted in a single process—without seams or fabric waste. This not only gives the knitwear a sleeker, more elegant fit, but also makes it more durable and comfortable to wear. Harley of Scotland has been a pioneer of this technology since 2001 and is recognized worldwide as a leader in this field.
Nep Twist is a special yarn-processing technique in which small fiber flecks (neps) are twisted into the yarn. This creates the characteristic mottled color effect for which many Harley of Scotland sweaters are known. The yarns come from a local spinning mill that is over 200 years old and are a distinctive feature of the brand. Learn more on our Nep Twist information page.
All Harley of Scotland knitwear is manufactured at the original factory site in Peterhead, in northeastern Scotland. The company handles every step of the process in-house—from design and yarn selection to dyeing and the finished knitwear. Made in Scotland, through and through.
Harley of Scotland recommends washing at 30°C on a gentle cycle or by hand using a mild wool detergent. Never hang the sweater to dry—instead, lay it flat on a towel to dry while maintaining its shape. Do not tumble dry. With proper care, Harley of Scotland knitwear will last for many decades.
