Der Black Watch ist einer der bekanntesten Tartans der Welt — einer der wenigen, der seinen Namen nicht von einem Clan, sondern von einem Regiment trägt. Um 1725 wurden sechs Highland-Kompanien zur Patrouille zusammengestellt — die „Black Watch", die dunkle Wacht. 1729 wurde daraus das 42. Royal Highland Regiment, das erste Highland-Regiment der britischen Armee.
