Bunnahabhain (pronounced: Bunna-ha-ven) is located on the northeastern coast of Islay, in a remote area accessible only via a single gravel road—until 1993, all supplies were delivered by ship. The distillery was founded in 1881 and draws its water from the Margadale River, which flows through peat-free granite bedrock. This explains what makes “ Bunnahabhain ” so unusual: it is one of the milder “ Islay ” malts, barely peated, almost the opposite of “ Ardbeg ” and “ Laphroaig ”—proof that “ Islay ” is more than just smoke.
Bunnahabhain , 18 Years Old, is aged for 18 years in sherry casks and develops a deep, mahogany-hued amber color. On the nose: rich notes of Sherry, caramel, oak, and toffee apple. On the palate: caramel and toffee with Sherry, molasses, roasted chestnuts, and a subtle hint of sea salt. On the finish: toffee fudge, dried fruit, and fruitcake with a Christmas-like spiciness. Bottled at 46.3% ABV, non-chill-filtered, with no added color.
