How to care for your wool blanket.
Lambswool blankets are among the most popular items in any home. This is easy to understand, as they are soft and warm, yet resistant to damage and stains. Since wool is naturally breathable, it wicks away moisture, meaning it only needs to be washed sparingly. This not only extends the life of your blanket but is also better for the environment.
Follow these simple guidelines to keep your blanket in top condition:
1. Air it out regularly
To ensure your blanket stays fresh, it’s important to hang it outside where there’s good airflow. Shake out your blanket thoroughly, then let the fresh air remove any dust or dirt from it.
2. Brush with a soft brush
To keep your blanket in excellent condition, you need to ensure that the wool fibers remain smooth and all lie in the same direction. Simply lay your blanket on the floor and brush along the grain of the blanket. This will also remove any surface residue or stains from the blanket.
3. Clean liquid stains
Although wool is naturally dirt- and water-repellent, after a few minutes the liquid begins to soak into the fabric. Therefore, clean the stain with a good, reputable, mild wool soap and warm water to remove it. Please avoid scrubbing the fabric, as the resulting friction can cause pilling. Instead, let the warm water and detergent soak into the stained area and blot it with a soft cloth.
4. Cleaning heavily soiled blankets
We recommend having our blankets professionally dry-cleaned if they are heavily soiled.
Machine washing can cause the blanket to shrink due to heat and become misshapen from the spin cycle.
5. Storing wool blankets
When your wool blanket is not in use, we recommend storing it in a dark, cool place, in airtight containers, or in a bag. It is also advisable to add a few cedar wood chips, as cedar wood is a natural repellent for flying insects.
