Most of us are familiar with the modern practice of associating the anniversary of each year of marriage with a particular material. The origins of this practice can be found in history.
It is believed that in the Germanic regions of Central Europe in the Middle Ages, a wife was given a silver wreath on her 25th wedding anniversary and a gold wreath on her 50th. These were considered lucky charms. The association of a "silver anniversary" for 25 years and a "golden anniversary" for 50 years has continued to this day.
Many of the other anniversary associations can be traced back to the Victorian era, where items were chosen to bring good luck and prosperity. Some scholars believe that the specific materials correspond with the strengthening of the marriage over time, with each gift increasing in value.
The association of wool as a symbol of good luck can be traced back to Roman times. A Roman bride wore a simple white dress known as a tunica recta, usually made from woven white wool. Around her waist was tied a belt of wool with a Hercules knot (reef knot), from which the term "tying the knot" is believed to have its origins. In Roman times, wool was considered lucky as it warded off evil. When the bride reached the groom's house with her wedding procession, she would find the doorstep decorated with garlands of flowers. The bride would then rub the doorstep with fat and oil and tie wool around the doorstep to bring good luck. She would then be lifted over the threshold (a tradition that has survived to this day).
It is not known why seventh years are associated with wool, but it is believed that wool is a symbol of warmth, renewal, comfort, durability and security - all attributes of a strong and healthy relationship.
